Of significant milestones which pass us by, one was the recent Roe versus Wade anniversary on January 22. 

It is a sobering reminder of what has happened since that US Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion in 1973. According to statistics, tens of millions of lives have been snuffed out in the years since then.

The debate surrounding this issue remains socially divisive. However, the real question for thoughtful people is not so much what society's opinions are, but what foundational values are jeopardized by this issue.

For Christian people, God is the anchor and starting point for all considerations. First of all, God's Word tells us He alone is the sovereign God. And in His sovereignty He is the giver of life, and has reserved for Himself the sole right to terminate life.

We believe that God created man and woman in His image, and He told them to be fruitful, to multiply, and to replenish the earth (Genesis 1:27, 28).

We also believe that God sees the unborn and loves and cares for them (Psalm 139:13-17).

The Bible has a special account of two unborn babies being recognized by God in Luke 1:41-44. How wonderful that Elizabeth said to Mary that her unborn baby was blessed! This child was destined to become our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! How would He have come to us as a Saviour if Elizabeth and Mary had become aborting mothers?

Mary and Elizabeth both found joy in being the handmaids of the Lord, and this joy involved the children born to them. God�s plan of one man and one woman being joined together for life, and welcoming the children God gives them, cannot be improved.

Another foundational point to this issue is the increasingly documented reality of the grief and mental anguish which abortion caused a woman to go through -- feelings of anguish and guilt which may last a lifetime.

We believe these are realities which point to the God-instilled understanding that human life is sacred. And no matter what may be accepted as norms by society in general, deviation from God's foundational values brings an unacceptable price.
